OUR STORY

Blackout was founded in the summer of 2007 by a group of students at the University of New Mexico.  We started with late night sketch comedy shows and eventually moved on to mounting full length productions. For many years, Blackout ran Wrinkle Writing, a large-scale education program that served hundreds of students a year improving literacy through playwriting.

Today, Blackout has expanded into a different kind of theatre. In addition to traditional theatre programming, we develop interdisciplinary work from scratch, create sketch comedy and produce digital media. Blackout specifically aims to work for and with the community, meaning that it collaborates in many ways with members of the community and often makes art that centers on Burqueño and New Mexican culture, events, people, language, and values.

OUR MISSION

Creating stories to engage and ignite community.
Blackout is committed to producing work by, for, and centering on New Mexicans; making theatre and digital media affordable and accessible to a wide range of audiences; and expanding the definition of theatre by developing innovative, multidisciplinary works outside of traditional theatrical institutions and structures.

Blackout is a proud member of the Network of Ensemble Theaters, whose mission is "propelling ensemble theatre practice to the forefront of the American culture and society," and of the Albuquerque Theatre Guild, which "celebrates and promotes the value of the performing arts community in the greater Albuquerque area."
